The shackles were utilized in what was known as the "Center Passage",
the second section of the transatlantic slave commerce.
The trade generally adopted a three-part triangular route, with ships journeying from
Europe to Africa to swap goods for individuals, before travelling on to the Americas,
where those that survived the voyage were bought into enslavement and
commodities reminiscent of sugar, cotton and tobacco were loaded for the return trip to Europe. ”
